“Hair fall” can mean very different things: more hair in the shower, a widening part, a receding hairline, small smooth patches, breakage, or itching with scale. The first job is to name the pattern. Treatment becomes much more sensible after that.

Shedding and thinning are not the same

Telogen effluvium is a type of increased shedding that can follow illness, fever, major stress, rapid weight change, childbirth or nutritional problems. Pattern hair loss is more about gradual miniaturisation and visible thinning in characteristic areas. They can happen together, which is why a quick look at a single day’s hair fall is not always enough.

The scalp deserves examination too

Dandruff, psoriasis, fungal infection, scarring disorders and inflammation can contribute to symptoms and sometimes hair loss. A dermatologist may examine the scalp closely, perform a hair-pull test or use magnification. Blood tests are chosen when the history suggests they will answer a specific question rather than as a universal “hair fall package.”

Before procedures, ask what diagnosis is being treated

PRP, growth-factor approaches, low-level light, transplant consultation and other procedures are often marketed under the umbrella of hair restoration. Their usefulness depends on the diagnosis, stage and donor area. A procedure cannot substitute for identifying an untreated medical cause of shedding.
